Life IS An Adventure (Part 1)

Posted by rhonda. No Comments

Life is full of change. That is a fact, so one of the most powerful traits you can have to ensure success is flexibility. Far too many times in life, when difficult things threaten, your response can be automatically one of fear. Fear leads us away from flexibility and thus away from coping in a way that would help us. In the past several months, this blog has looked at fierceness as a way to address and overcome fear. Flexibility is a major component of fierceness.

Flexibility is a curious component of fierceness. You may think of aggression or steadfastness more readily with fierceness, but flexibility must be there as well. There are many squirrels in my yard and they are fierce in their determination to eat my bird seed. Flexibility comes into the picture in many ways – squirrels dangling off feeders by the hind legs, pursuing new branches and routes to access the food regardless of the barriers I create, and the ability to instantly give up the quest, at least temporarily, whenever my dog…Molly the WonderDog arrives on the scene to scare them away. And yet despite the best efforts of both me and Molly the WonderDog, the squirrels do not quit. They are indeed flexible and in many ways also very fierce.

HOW MUCH AND WHEN DO YOU BEND?
There is a famous old quote that goes something like, “Life is what happens to us while we are making other plans.” Change is a part of life. You may be increasingly aware of this as the pace of change has accelerated in the past few years. History has lessons for us about creatures (dinosaurs), people (Aztecs), corporations (Woolworths) and even civilizations (the Roman Empire) that were unable to adapt to change. Flexibility allows you to stay current with change and still thrive in your life. Without flexibility, you are rigid and can become stuck, even paralyzed.

People who fail to thrive in life will often be able to tell you all the reasons they did not thrive; the obstacles in their way and the events that stole their opportunities. The sad fact is that there will always be things that go wrong in all of our lives. Flexibility allows you to continue to progress and to find ways around obstacles so that your goals do not vanish or become dreams that could not come true. Flexibility allows you to still have the muscle you need to press on with what you want.

Happiness – Part 2

Posted by rhonda. No Comments

Happiness is important for so many reasons, beyond the obvious fact that most people would prefer to be Happy rather than not. There is little doubt about the powerful effects positive emotions can have on your physical health and well-being. At the same time, there is equally little doubt about the effects that negative emotions can have on you.

Happiness will not only protect your body from stressors that can lead to dis-ease, but it can even boost your immune system’s ability to fight off the common cold.

But, I’ve realized that for many, “Happiness” is far too nebulous a term. Do you struggle to define an activity that truly makes you Happy? If so, I want to share with you a new definition that nearly everyone can easily grasp and apply.

“Happiness” can more accurately be identified by your heart and your mind as whatever gets you Excited.

It is what makes you JUMP out of bed in the morning with eager anticipation to start your day. Once you identify that activity, whatever it is, you can start to focus on it, and structure your Life to do more of that.

If you can become Happier…and you can if you choose to… you will both build and Live a better Life…not to mention, but I will…you will help build a better world. If you can improve your ability to address stresses and negative emotions, you’re more likely to be able to do the things that no one would claim are trivial. For me, this is clear…and most of the time easy. My mission is to assist others in developing strategies to help them help themselves to Live an Empowered and Joy-filled Life. I truly love what I do, and that is why “working” long hours every week continues to be a source of Happiness in my Life.

And, speaking of work, and hence money… especially, in what we perceive as somewhat unsettling economic times… is it true that money can’t bring you Happiness? (To be continued in part 3)

Happiness – Part 1

Posted by rhonda. No Comments

Ask Yourself…

What am I really looking for in life?

Once you look deeper, beyond your desire for a bigger house or a fancier car, you will most likely discover that what you’re truly searching for is not more “stuff,” but more Happiness… more Joy.

It may seem some people are born with enjoyment for Life programmed into their hardwiring, whereas for others finding Happiness seems an elusive goal. But, like any programming, yours can be changed.

Here are just a few of the my Simple Tips/Secrets that can help you rewrite your Life program into one that is filled with Joy.

1. Experiment to find out what makes you Happy. If you haven’t taken the time to explore what brings Joy to your Life on a regular basis, you may realize you don’t even know what brings you Happiness anymore. If that’s the case, try out different things, including some you’ve never done before. The answers just might surprise you.

2. Focus on Gratitude. Incorporate a Daily gratitude session where you identify something you are grateful for. You can express your Gratitude in any number of ways: silently say “Thank you,” call or email the person you want to thank, or devise your own gratitude ritual. And…don’t forget to thank yourself…yes, YOU…for yet another day with YOU!

3. Take time to savor Life. Resolve to cut down on rushing from one thing to the next – delegate or say, “no” – to reduce your number of appointments and daily tasks.

4. Stop watching and reading depressing news. In the beginning you may worry that you’ll miss something, but think about it – when was the last time you truly needed to know the things covered in the daily news. Being selective about the information you expose yourself to can have an incredible impact on your level of personal happiness.

5. Laugh now! When you’re in the middle of a mess, look around you and realize the absurdity of the moment. Remind yourself that a year from now, no one will care, and you’ll probably be laughing about it anyway, so why wait? Laugh about it now!

Creativity: It’s Not Just for Artists Anymore

Posted by rhonda. No Comments

Recently, IBM did a study, asking more than 1500 CEOs in 60 countries and 33 industries what they thought was the most important leadership quality for today and the next 5 years. More than 60% said that creativity was this quality. The cover story of the July 19 issue of Newsweek was “Creativity in America.” The article said there is a “crisis” in creativity. While these, plus many other articles and
studies have shined the spotlight on creativity as a valued attribute, none of them addresses what creativity really is, how we can become more creative and how to use creativity as a tool for our business life and, in fact, all aspects of our life.

In this episode, Neil Tepper will offer listeners a simple definition of creativity, share ways to apply creativity in their everyday lives and give them specific ways to enhance their own creativity. He will also speak about his new book, “Prescriptions for Living A Creative Life,” as well as enjoy in-the-moment conversation.

Day 11. Embrace what you can give

Posted by rhonda. No Comments

It is not the money but the gift that counts. It should be from the heart… whatever the time of year or the season. Make things, do things, bake things! I coached a woman who was devastated over the breakup of a long term romance. She was successful and well thought of and had everything she wanted. She knew she should be grateful but couldn’t be. My Inner Voice suggested she go to a specific organization that dealt with the dying and volunteer. About a month later she called back with a sparkle in her voice. She said she had found real joy in just taking a deep breath, because she had been exposed to many people through her volunteering who were unable to take the same deep breath.
